Located on the western side of the Greek mainland, Lefkada island belongs to the Ionian Sea. This is one of the most beautiful Greek islands, world famous for its fantastic beaches with the exotic blue waters. The western side of Lefkada island distinguishes for the wonderful beaches with the many shades of blue colour, from very light to deep blue. Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma are the most famous beaches, while there are many other coasts less famous but equally charming, like Mylos, Kalamitsi, Agios Ioannis, Tsoukalades and more. Some of these beaches are organized, while others are secluded and ideal for privacy. Also some places, like Mylos beach, are frequented by naturists.
Although Lefkada island has fantastic beaches, its landscape is mainly mountainous. The centre of the island has a large mountain range with green trees, waterfalls, secluded villages and hiking paths. The western coastline has large beaches surrounded by steep cliffs, while the eastern coastline has more moderate bays with shallow waters, like Nikiana, Nydri and Ligia. These three fishing villages have many delicious taverns by the sea to try local dishes.
The main town is Lefkada Town, located on the northern side of the island. This is a central spot as most services are found there. At the suburbs of this town, you can also find Saint Thomas Village, our lovely Lefkada hotel. At a close distance to Lefkada Town, there are nice beaches to enjoy a fantastic swim, like Agios Ioannis, Mylos, Tsoukalades and Agios Nikitas.
The most tourist villages of Lefkada island are Nydri, Vassiliki, Agios Nikitas, Nikiana and Sivota. This is where many accommodations and shops can be found. Nydri and Vassiliki also have small ports that serve tour boats and local ferries to other Ionian islands, like Meganisi, Kefalonia and Ithaca.
Lefkada island is among the most famous Greek destinations for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Particularly the beaches of Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki are among the most popular windsurfing spots in Greece. There, visitors can find surfing centers to offer courses for all levels and rent the necessary equipment.
How to get to Lefkada island
Although Lefkada is an island, due to its close distance to the western mainland coasts of Greece, it is accessible by car through a narrow bridge. Also in summer there is ferry connection between Lefkada (Vassiliki port), Kefalonia (Fiscardo port) and Ithaca (Frikes port).
