Lefkada windsurfing and kitesurfing: ride the wind

Over the last years, Lefkada island is getting famous as a perfect place for wind sports, particularly windsurfing and kitesurfing. The best spot for Lefkada windsurfing is the beach of Vassiliki, on the southern side of the island, while the best spot for kitesurfing is Agios Ioannis beach, close to Lefkada Town.

Both beaches are organized with many surfing centers that offer courses and rent the necessary equipment. Mylos beach close to Agios Nikitas is also nice for windsurfing, but there are no surfing centers there, which means that surfers must carry their own equipment.

Lefkada kitesurfing: Agios Ioannis beach

The beach of Agios Ioannis is found 2 km from Lefkada Town, only 10 min drive from our Lefkada apartments, Saint Thomas Village. This is a large beach with crystal water and white sand. As it is lined up by restaurants and water sports centers, this is a great place for both families and surfers.

With 90% wind every day from April to September, Agios Ioannis is a perfect place for top level Lefkada kitesurfing. Super thermal wind (15-20 knots on average) blows steadily in summer, making it a great spot for both beginners and advanced kitesurfers. A wind of 4-6 knots starts gradually in the morning and becomes about 8-12 knots in the midday. From the afternoon and until sunset, the wind is getting stronger at 15-20 knots and this is the time for advanced surfers to go and ride the waves.

As the water in Agios Ioannis is deep, open sea waves frequently appear, making it more fun for surfers.

Lefkada windsurfing: Vassiliki beach

The most popular spot for Lefkada windsurfing is the bay of Vassiliki, on the southern side of the island. The wind conditions there are ideal for all levels, from beginners to highly advanced. The wind changes in direction and gets stronger during the day, making it a great spot for all levels.

In the morning, the sea has a light breeze which makes it great for courses and starting surfs. The shallow coast makes it even easier to learn. In the afternoon, the wind gets stronger and ideal for wave jumps and stunts.
